In his crisp style, Dr. Rajesh Kadian gives the reader an
overview of how and why the tangle in Kashmir steadily worsened, highlighting
the major turning points in the chequered story. He traces the history of the
Kashmiri people and puts the events of 1947 in a clear perspective. In doing so
the author exposes for the first time the machinations of the British, the
Indians and the Pakistanis at the time of the Partition of the British Indian
Empire which marked the onset of the Kashmir tangle. The subsequent history of
the two parts of divided Kashmir is elucidated, providing a much needed
perspective on Kashmir as a whole. Also probed afresh is the rocky relationship
between the governments in New Delhi and Sheikh Abdullah and the unsteady course
of democracy in Srinagar.
The recent situation is comprehensively described covering
both the surging tide of militancy in the Kashmir Valley and the tug-of-war in
Azad Kashmir and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The author assesses the various
options available both to India and Pakistan and here the book provides a signal
contribution by addressing squarely the implications of various courses.
The prospects for the future are
analysed with rare insight. The author’s conclusions are sobering. These include
the inevitability of a long drawn-out struggle in Kashmir and the near-certainty
of another Indo-Pakistan war. In the latter context, the author has scored
another first in painting the likely scenarios of such a war over Kashmir.
